In a virtual meeting held recently, Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport & Highways and the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the Government of India, said that India is getting equipped to welcome electric vehicles in India. Goverment has plans to setup an Electric Charging Kiosk at 69,000 petrol stations across India making it an electric vehicle nation by 2030. Apart from this, Government is also taking measures to promote electric vehicles by slashing GST to 5% and delinking battery costs from 2&3 wheelers which normally accounts to 30% of the total cost of the vehicle.
During the meeting, Mr. Gadkari also emphasized on the development and use of Flex Engines that can use petrol or ethanol/CNG as fuels. Government has also approved phases 1 & 2 of FAME(Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of(Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India) by means of which several organizations can make use of capital grants for promoting electric vehicles and building and operating charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in India. Many Private players, have also joined the move thereby helping India adopt to electric revolution.
Tesla, on the other hand, has its own charging station manufacturing units that has developed 1,344 Super Chargers worldwide and is still growing. Who knows, if the situation demands, Tesla too can get into the battleground!

2. Indian Streets and Tesla: India is the largest manufacturer of two-wheelers and fourth largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in the world. With around 25 Million cars already running on the Indian Streets, there is always a way to overcome street barriers. While a good ground clearance and suspension system has been a, so far, a good tactic of running vehicles in India, there are still many ways in which this can be dealt. Also, one should never forget the man behind Tesla, Elon Musk, for whom nothing is impossible. He always has a way out of any difficulty.
3. How costly will be Tesla? : As per several sources, there is a 85-100% import tax levied on finished vehicles in India, which means the cost of the car would double here, in the Indian Markets. Tesla's cheapest vehicle, back in the US is priced at $38,000(around Rs. 30,00,000) which can cost nearly Rs. 60,00,000 when it arrives in India. While the cost may not be affordable for the lower and middle class, others can have the pleasure of riding Tesla very soon. We can only hope that Tesla starts manufacturing the vehicle in India soon to get a huge relief from the heavy taxes and many other classes of people can also afford it!
