6 Things you've been doing wrong all your life!

With the world moving at a rapid speed and lives fast tracked, people now want their work to be done with more ease and comfort. While many of us got used to the things stated below, there is a need for us to become a little conscious. Let's dive in!
    non stick pan, teflon pan

  1. Using non-stick pans: Rubbing and washing the remains of food in those sticky pans is quite a tedious job! And this is where Non-Sticks pans act as a lifesaver and gain people's attention as an appealing alternative. But, are we risking our lives for some comfortable alternative?

What is the most attractive thing about a non-stick pan is its easy to clean surface which is nothing but polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) which we know popularly as Teflon Sheet. This clear plastic, coats the surface of these non-stick pans, giving them a waxy and easy-to-clean surface.

An article by lifescience.com, says, "Experts tend to agree that Teflon itself isn’t a problem. The coating itself is considered non-toxic. Even if you ingest small flakes of it, it passes right through you. But some experts are concerned about what happens when Teflon gets too hot. "When pans are overheated, that PTFE coating begins to disintegrate," Fenton told Live Science. As Teflon breaks down, it releases a host of toxic gases. In rare instances, breathing in these chemical fumes can cause polymer fume fever, a condition characterized by a high fever, shortness of breath, and weakness. These gases also deadly to birds — lightbulbs coated in Teflon have wiped out poultry houses. Of particular concern is perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one of the chemicals released when Teflon pans heat up. Long-term exposure to PFOA is linked to a host of conditions from cancer to thyroid disease, Fenton said. "

Whether to use it or not, now lies in the hands of the reader.

Alternatives: Use Stainless steel, cast iron, or clay pots and prefer some tedious work over a loss of life.

  2. Using Aluminum Utensils including Aluminium Foil: We all know how good is aluminum in keeping our foods warm but you should also know that people with Alzheimer's had an increased concentration of aluminum in their brains. Several studies also investigated cancer incidences in Aluminum plant workers.

While cooking in an Aluminum utensil, a small percentage of aluminum gets leached into your food and it increases if the food is cooked or kept in that pot for long or the food is too acidic i.e. High amount of vinegar or tomato sauce, etc. Aluminum adds toxicity to our body thus causing various diseases. A less amount of Aluminum intake is always advisable.

Alternatives: If you still wanna stick to aluminum utensils, prefer anodized ones. And if you are committed to change, use stainless steel, cast iron, or clay pots.

    cold drink, soft drink

  3. Consuming Cold Drinks: While cold drinks are great for a party, they are equally bad for your body. Cold drinks are nothing but sugary soda. While we know how bad is sugar for our body, we should also know that these sugary sodas consist of both glucose and fructose, and fructose is even worse for our body. While every cell in our body can metabolize glucose, fructose can be metabolized only by our liver. Sugary drinks consist of a high level of fructose that puts overloads our liver and hence, turns it into fat. This fat get shipped out as blood triglycerides, while a part of it remains in our liver. Over time, this can contribute to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Alternatives: Fresh fruit juice, Lassi, Sugarcane Juice, etc.

  4. Using Artificial Sweeteners: Although artificial sweeteners are a badass alternative for people with diabetes, as they are sweeter than sugar and comparatively fewer calories.  But, what comes along with this alternative is a lot of side-effects. Artificial Sweeteners are way too sweet than natural sugar, and if you are consuming them in your everyday diet, your taste buds get accustomed to super sweet things. This also affects the normal gut microbiota which can lead to obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Alternative: Use regular sugar in smaller amount.

    agarbatti, incense sticks

  5. Lighting Agarbattis: Yes! You heard it right. Those incense sticks that get lit every morning in 85% of Indian homes and lights up the whole house with their fragrance can actually be a reason for you to get diagnosed with cancer.
Yes! According to The Quint, researchers found that incense-smoke was mutagenic (causes DNA changes at cell level), genotoxic (causes genetic changes leading to cancer) and cytotoxic (so toxic that it kills your cells).

So what's the alternative? In ages where agarbattis were yet to be discovered, people used Diyas to worship their Deities. We can do the same now as well. And if your worship is incomplete without agarbattis, 1 or 2 agarbattis would be enough. People with respiratory problems should stay completely clear of agarbattis.

    deodorant

  6. Using Deodorants: Ever thought about how deodorants work? These Deodorants(antiperspirants) release Aluminum Salts that block sweat from forming on the surface of your pores. Now the question that arises is, does this salt gets absorbed or trapped in your body?

Research shows that regular use of antiperspirants can cause aluminum to accumulate in the breast tissue, though it cannot necessarily be the reason for breast cancer. But, it is of great concern for people with kidney problems, especially if the kidney function is 30 percent or less. A normal body with a healthy kidney can filter aluminum out of your body but if it doesn't function properly, you may land up in the danger zone. Too much aluminum has also been the reason for bone diseases or dementia.

Alternative: Using normal skin powder or asbestos-free talcom powders.
